The engineer who never stopped writing
By profession I am an engineer and a professor. I have spent my career studying how things move — traffic through cities, signals through intersections, patterns through data — and teaching others to see the hidden order in what looks like chaos. It turns out that is also a fair description of writing a poem.
Poetry came first, long before the equations. I grew up in Arabic — it is the language of my heart, the one I read art and poetry in — while English became the language of my profession, the one I read science in. I am a poet, a songwriter, a composer, and a singer: some of these poems stayed on the page, and others would not sit still until I gave them a melody and a voice. Lately my two lives have even started collaborating — my research has taught machines to understand the instruments I love: the oud, the qanun, the violin.
This diwan is where all of it lives together: the written word and the sung word, the two languages, the professor and the poet. If something here moves you — as a reader, a fellow musician, a publisher, or a producer — I would love to hear from you.
المهندس الذي لم يتوقف عن الكتابة
أنا مهندسٌ وأستاذٌ جامعيٌّ بحكم المهنة. أمضيتُ مسيرتي المهنيّة أدرسُ كيف تتحرّك الأشياء — المرورُ في المدن، والإشاراتُ في التقاطعات، والأنماطُ في البيانات — وأعلّمُ الآخرين أن يروا النظامَ الخفيَّ فيما يبدو فوضى. وقد تبيّن أنّ هذا وصفٌ صادقٌ لكتابة القصيدة أيضًا.
جاء الشعرُ أوّلًا، قبل المعادلات بزمنٍ طويل. نشأتُ في حضن العربيّة — فهي لغةُ القلب، وبها أقرأ الفنَّ والشعر — بينما صارت الإنجليزيّةُ لغةَ مهنتي، وبها أقرأ العلم. أنا شاعرٌ وكاتبُ أغانٍ وملحّنٌ ومغنٍّ: بعضُ هذه القصائد بقيت على الورق، وبعضُها أبى أن يهدأ حتى وهبتُه لحنًا وصوتًا. بل إنّ حياتَيَّ الاثنتين بدأتا تتعاونان مؤخّرًا: فقد علّمتْ أبحاثي الآلةَ الذكيّة أن تفهم الآلاتِ التي أحبّ: العودَ والقانونَ والكمان.
هذا الديوانُ هو حيث يجتمع ذلك كلُّه: الكلمةُ المكتوبةُ والكلمةُ المغنّاة، واللغتان، والأستاذُ والشاعر. فإن حرّك شيءٌ هنا قلبَك — قارئًا كنتَ أو موسيقيًّا أو ناشرًا أو منتجًا — فيسعدني أن أسمع منك.
